HISTORY

Company Background

Syarikat Muda Osman Sdn Bhd (SMO) has been pioneered by the late Haji Muda Osman in early 1939. Starting with the retail, wholesale and distribution of various types of books and stationery, the company has been involved in distribution and marketing of cigarettes in the vicinity of Pasir Mas district.

Next, Haji Muda Osman was to expand his business to Kota Bharu which at the same time this business has been passed on to his children which are Haji Hassan, Haji Othman and Haji Yusoff. Under their management and administration, Syarikat Osman Muda has grown into one of the successful indigenous companies and well known and also has been recognized their ability and credibility of the financial aspects.

In line with the rapid expansion of business, the Syarikat Muda Osman was incorporated on August 25, 1987. The upgrading of this business is to recognize family members which have a qualified in business administration and then lead the company in business management books and cigarettes.

In 1998, despite the economy being depressed SMO has increased its authorized share capital from RM500, 000.00 to RM5, 000,000.00 paid-up capital of RM165, 003.00 to RM1, 005,003.00. This shows a positive sign in terms of performance, business capabilities and financial stability.

SMO has been recognized as the sole distributor of Dawama Sdn. Bhd. for books published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in the state of Kelantan as well as a number of publishers who is no stranger among readers which are Sasbadi, Pelangi, Oxford, MPH, Pearson, Utusan Publications and others. SMO is also a major supplier of educational textbooks to schools and institutions of higher learning in Kelantan. In addition, the SMO is a sponsor to a number of Kelantan’s Book Fair, an annual event organized by the Jabatan Pelajaran Kelantan dan Persatuan Perpustakaan Sekolah Kelantan (PUSTAKA) to promote the books as well as promote a culture of reading among students and children at various ages.

In the area of distribution of cigarettes, the SMO in 1993 was appointed the sole distributor of MTC Marketing Sdn. Bhd. to the Kelantan state and northern state of Terengganu.

In November 1999, following the merger of the parent company Malaysian Tobacco Company Berhad and Rothman International Berhad, SMO has decided to withdraw from the area of distribution of cigarettes. SMO has strategically decided to expand the business in books and stationery by opening branches around the state of Kelantan and Terengganu.

Till the day, the SMO has a range of books and stationery shops around the state which are Kelantan in Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Machang, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai, Rantau Panjang and includes a branch in Jerteh, Terengganu.

SMO is now managed by the Board of Directors, Hj. Hassan Bin Muda, Hj. Yusoff Bin Muda, Hj. Kamaruzaman Bin Muda, Haji Ahmed Kamel Bin Muda and Mr. Azim Bin Othman, assisted by a group of skilled and experienced workers in various aspects of job specialization.

The Board has also planned a long-term master plan to launch a travel management company acquired by a generation of young families with more than 10 years of experience in administration and marketing.

SMO has registered a contract with the Ministry of Finance and other Ministry of Education and other government organizations in the state of Kelantan.

History of Business Development of SMO;

1939 - Late Hj. Muda Osman started by selling jute bags, crockery, and books in the city range of Pasir Mas.

1940 - Retail trade continued while sewing a shirt and skull cap.

1955 - Appointed as a "sub-distributor" to distribute cigarettes Malayan Tobacco Company in Pasir Mas.

1961 - Changing the business of crockery and kitchen utensils to books and stationery.

1962 - Appointed as agent for PFAFF sewing machine brand (Germany) in the Pasir Mas.

1967 - Enters the Kota Bharu market by opening a book and stationery store in the Malay Chamber of Commerce Building.

1976 - Appointed as sole distributor of the book Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka for the entire state of Kelantan.

1984 - Appointed as a distributor of cigarettes Malaysian Tobacco Company for the district, Pasir Mas / Tumpat.

1987 - Syarikat Osman Muda was incorporated into a limited company. Bringing the concept of "book and stationery shop fully equipped and comfortable" by opening a shop in Jalan Buluh Kubu, Kota Bharu.

1993 - Appointed as a distributor of cigarettes Malaysian Tobacco Company for the whole Kelantan state including the northern of Terengganu.

1993 - Opening a bookshop and stationery equipped in Pasir Puteh.

Dec 1999 - Modification of the SMO cigarettes distribution branch offices in Machang being a bookshop and stationery.

Dec 1999 - Modification of the book and stationery shop in Pasir Puteh to provide greater convenience to customers.

April 3, 2000 - Opening a bookshop and stationery equipped in Jerteh, Terengganu.

June 1, 2000 - Renting a factory with an area of more than 7,000 square feet in Kawasan Industri MARA Fasa II, Pengkalan Chepa.

01 Aug 2000 - Open Galeri Buku DBP, located at Ground Floor, Bangunan Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Wilayah Timur, Jalan Hospital, Kota Bharu.

September 2, 2000 - Opening a bookshop and stationery equipped in Tanah Merah.

02 Aug 2001 - Opening an equipped bookshop and stationery in a Suria Hotel building at Jalan Padang Garong, Kota Bharu. This area is the best business location in Kota Bharu, located next to the bus station.

14 Aug 2003 - Recognizing the need for storage management increasing, the management has decided to buy a factory from PKINK in Pengkalan Chepa Industrial Area II. With a floor area of 24.000 square feet in an area of one acre, the plant has been modified to be the headquarters of SMO.

July 29, 2004 - Opening a bookshop and stationery equipped in Rantau Panjang.

January 6, 2005 - Opening a bookshop and stationery equipped in Kuala Krai.

July 28, 2005 - Opening a bookshop and stationery equipped in Wakaf Che Yeh.

April 3, 2006 - Opening a bookshop and stationery equipped in Kubang Kerian.

December 21, 2006 - Opening up another book and stationery stores at Pasir Mas.

10 Sept 2007 - Opening a gift shop in town, Pasir Mas.
